Confirm departures before planning your day

Viator retains a Mýrdalsjökull snowmobile listing, but we could not confirm a current product price or departure calendar. The former operator’s snowmobile page now redirects to a buggy experience, which is a different activity. A listing, photo or review history alone does not establish that a snowmobile tour is operating.

Use the listing as a reference and ask the operator whether snowmobiling on Mýrdalsjökull is running on your travel date. If it is essential to your trip, get that confirmation before arranging your day around it. No reopening date has been verified.

Mýrdalsjökull: the ice cap above Katla

Mýrdalsjökull is a South Coast ice cap covering the Katla volcanic system. Sólheimajökull and Kötlujökull are outlet glaciers flowing from it. This geography explains why tours mentioning Mýrdalsjökull or Katla can offer very different days: riding on the ice cap, walking on an outlet glacier or visiting a natural ice cave.

For travellers staying around Vík or exploring the South Coast, the area is an appealing itinerary match. In clear conditions, a ride on the upper glacier can offer broad views towards the coast. Cloud, wind and visibility can change the experience, so choose for the activity and route rather than expecting a particular view.

What the retained snowmobile listing describes

The retained Viator product describes a guided glacier snowmobile excursion of approximately three hours in total. Its format includes a transfer from the local base towards the glacier, protective equipment and an English-speaking guide. The snowmobile can carry up to two people, subject to the operator’s rules.

  • The glacier journey: the transfer, equipment and briefing are part of the outing, before the guided ride across the snow and ice.
  • The time on a snowmobile: the three-hour duration is for the whole excursion. It does not promise three hours riding or a separate driving session for each person sharing.
  • The equipment: the retained listing names overalls, a helmet and a balaclava. Confirm the current inclusions, suitable sizes and what you must bring.

These are retained listing details, not a confirmed current offer. If departures resume or another provider offers the activity, check the new product’s riding time, vehicle, route, inclusions and requirements. Do not transfer the old listing’s terms to a different tour.

Where would you meet, and is transport included?

The retained listing names the Icelandic Mountain Guides Mýrdalsjökull base at Ytri-Sólheimar, around 25 km west of Vík. That is historical product information to verify, not an instruction to drive there for an unconfirmed departure. Current operator location information uses the name Bárukot; follow the exact address and check-in instructions supplied for your booking.

This meet-on-location listing does not include hotel pickup. A tour appearing under “Vík” on Viator does not mean it leaves from Vík town. Nor does this listing establish a Reykjavík transfer. A separate South Coast combination needs its own current product, pickup details and activity check.

Before paying, confirm how you will reach the meeting point, where the glacier transfer begins and when you must arrive. Allow for the approach drive and check official road conditions before travelling. Avoid a tight onward connection after a weather-dependent excursion.

Snowmobiling, Katla ice caves, buggies and glacier hikes

Start with the activity you want. A glacier name or a word left in an old booking URL is not enough to identify what a tour currently includes.

ExperienceWhat you doWhat to check
Mýrdalsjökull snowmobilingA guided snowmobile ride on the ice cap, with a transfer and briefing.A current departure, actual riding time and driver/passenger rules. The retained listing does not include a cave visit.
Katla natural ice caveA modified 4×4 journey and walking to a natural cave on Kötlujökull. The operator’s current Secret Ice Cave tour departs from Vík.The exact departure, walking requirements and cave access for your date. Snowmobiling is not implied.
Buggy or ATV outingAn off-road vehicle experience. The current glacier buggy product describes a route across black-sand and river terrain towards the glacier edge. The vehicle, route and stops. This is a different ride from snowmobiling across the ice cap.
Sólheimajökull glacier hikeA guided walking experience on an outlet glacier, using the equipment provided for that product.Walking difficulty, time on the ice and equipment. A glacier hike does not include a snowmobile ride.
Choose by the current activity description and inclusions, not the glacier name alone.

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to compare all three columns.

If you want to ride and go inside a glacier, compare an explicitly included combination. The Húsafell snowmobile and ice tunnel tour is on Langjökull and visits a constructed tunnel. It is a different glacier, departure and cave experience from Katla. Read the cave and tunnel guide.

Alternative glaciers when snowmobiling is the priority

These are separate destinations to compare, not interchangeable departures from Vík. Check availability for your date and the extra travel before changing your itinerary.

South Coast · Brú

Eyjafjallajökull

Consider this separate South Coast glacier if its departure and season fit your journey. The shortlisted tour meets at Brú on Road 249, rather than the Mýrdalsjökull base.

Before choosing: Confirm the date, meeting point and drive from your accommodation.

Reykjavík / Golden Circle / West Iceland

Langjökull

A Langjökull glacier snowmobile tour offers several departure formats: Reykjavík transport, local Geysir or Gullfoss departures, and a Húsafell tunnel combination.

Before choosing: Choose the departure first. This usually needs a different route or a separate day from your Vík plans.

Southeast Iceland

Vatnajökull

A Vatnajökull snowmobile tour can fit a road trip continuing into southeast Iceland. The shortlisted Glacier Journey product uses a local meeting point at Hotel Smyrlabjörg.

Before choosing: Check the exact base and date. It is a separate southeast itinerary, not a local Vík departure.

If staying close to Vík matters more than riding a snowmobile, compare a currently operating Katla cave or other local glacier activity. If riding matters most, use the tour finder and detailed choosing guide to match glacier snowmobile tours to your route and group.

Your Mýrdalsjökull booking checklist

For any offer you find, get answers for the actual product and date before paying. These checks are especially useful when an older listing is still visible.

  • Operation: is this snowmobile activity running, and is your selected date actually available?
  • Activity and glacier: does the current itinerary explicitly name snowmobiling on Mýrdalsjökull? Does it include a cave, or is that a separate booking?
  • Meeting and transport: what is the exact base or pickup point, check-in time and transport inclusion? How will you get there?
  • Your group: which licence and driver age are accepted, who can be a passenger, and what are the current child and suitability rules?
  • Machines and full price: is the quote per person sharing, and what compulsory single-rider or odd-group supplements apply?
  • Time and changes: how much is actual snowmobile time, and what cancellation, rescheduling or refund terms apply if the ride cannot operate?

The retained listing requires a valid driving licence and describes a single-rider charge for solo travellers or odd-numbered groups. Current accepted licence classes, driver ages, child rules and supplement prices still need confirmation. Check driver, passenger and family requirements and what to wear.

A useful question for the operator

“Is your Mýrdalsjökull snowmobile tour operating on [date] for [number and ages] travellers? Please confirm the actual riding time, meeting point, driver and passenger requirements, machine allocation and full price including compulsory extras.”

Mýrdalsjökull snowmobiling FAQ

Can I currently book a Mýrdalsjökull snowmobile tour?

We could not verify a current price or departure calendar for the retained Viator listing on 2 October 2026. Its former operator’s snowmobile URL redirects to a buggy tour. Check operation and a specific date directly before planning around it; this does not establish permanent closure or a reopening date.

Does the snowmobile tour include the Katla ice cave?

The retained snowmobile listing does not include an ice-cave visit. A Katla cave trip is a separate activity, typically involving a modified 4×4 journey and walking on Kötlujökull. Book a cave visit explicitly if it is part of the day you want.

Does it depart from Vík or include Reykjavík pickup?

The retained product meets at a glacier-area base west of Vík and excludes hotel pickup. A Vík category on Viator is not proof of a town departure. Reykjavík transport would need a separate, currently confirmed combination product. Use the meeting point on the actual booking.

Can I snowmobile on Mýrdalsjökull in summer?

Older descriptions advertised summer riding, but we have not verified a current operating season. Check that snowmobiling is running and that your exact date is available. A base camp or a buggy tour operating year-round does not confirm year-round snowmobiling.

Is the three-hour duration all riding time?

No. The retained listing’s approximately three hours describe the whole excursion, including the transfer and preparations. Confirm the guided snowmobile session separately. Sharing a machine does not promise equal driving time or a separate session for each person.

Can children or passengers without a licence join?

The retained product describes tandem machines and requires a valid licence for driving. Current passenger and child rules need confirmation, and older sources give inconsistent child-age guidance. Ask about each traveller’s age, the eligible driver and the permitted group arrangement before booking.

Which glacier should I consider instead?

For a South Coast route, compare the separate Eyjafjallajökull departure at Brú. For Reykjavík, the Golden Circle or West Iceland, consider Langjökull’s different formats. For a southeast road trip, consider Vatnajökull. Choose by your travel date, meeting point and route rather than the glacier name alone.
