Share the experience
Happy to share a machine?
Compare the shared per-person fare. Check who will drive, whether both eligible riders can take a turn and the passenger rules.
Choose how you want to ride
Choose between sharing a snowmobile, riding your own machine in a guided group or arranging a private experience. Check what is exclusive, how your group is allocated and the full booking cost before choosing.

Travelling alone describes your party. Single riding describes the machine. Private describes the parts reserved for your group.
Share the experience
Compare the shared per-person fare. Check who will drive, whether both eligible riders can take a turn and the passenger rules.
Your own machine
Look for a single-rider option on a suitable guided tour. Confirm the supplement and availability before assuming you can upgrade.
Your own party
Request a private arrangement and confirm the guide, activity group and transport separately. A private vehicle alone does not settle all three.
Two people, one machine
One person drives while the other rides as passenger. On products that permit a change, both eligible drivers may take a turn.
Check: The rate may still be per person. Confirm driver changes and passenger requirements.
One person, one machine
You occupy a machine yourself while following the guided departure. This can avoid splitting driving time with a companion.
Check: Confirm the solo extra and whether the machine can be reserved in advance.
Exclusive road transport
A vehicle can be reserved for your party for the road journey or sightseeing part of the itinerary.
Check: Ask whether the glacier transfer and snowmobile group are also exclusive.
A separately arranged experience
You arrange the snowmobile activity for your party with confirmed private guiding. Other components still need their own inclusions check.
Check: Get written confirmation of the guide, group, machines, transport and any extra activities.
Small group is another distinction. A smaller scheduled departure may still include other bookings. Look for explicit exclusivity rather than relying on words such as “personal” or “more private.”
For a Langjökull glacier snowmobile tour, sharing can suit two people who are comfortable taking driver and passenger roles. A solo option can suit an eligible driver who wants their own machine. In either case, the operator sets the route and pace; a single machine is not permission to leave the group.
Do not assume a shared session gives each person half the advertised driving time. The outing can include briefing and stops, and a change of driver depends on the product and instructions. Mountaineers describes a change at its middle stop; the Húsafell combination also allows turns when both riders qualify. Neither establishes the same arrangement for every operator.
Every person who drives needs to meet the selected product’s licence and age rules, including someone who starts as a passenger. If one person cannot drive, the eligible driver may remain at the controls for the shared ride. Check passenger ages, fit and weight limits separately in the requirements guide.
If you travel alone without the required licence, ask about a confirmed passenger arrangement before booking. Some operators offer an extra guide to drive for an additional charge, but this is a requested arrangement, not an automatic seat on every departure. Do not assume the operator will pair you with another customer.
These examples assume a product using two-seat machines and permitting the chosen configuration. They help you ask the right questions; they are not booking instructions for every tour.
| Your preferred setup | Illustrative machine allocation | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| One traveller driving alone | One single-rider machine | An eligible driver, the solo ticket or extra, and machine availability. |
| Two travellers sharing | One shared machine | At least one eligible driver. Both must qualify if they want to change driver. |
| Three travellers, two sharing | One shared machine + one solo machine | At least two eligible drivers for this setup and the product’s odd-number booking rule. |
| Four travellers sharing in pairs | Two shared machines | At least two eligible drivers and suitable passenger pairings. |
| Four travellers each riding alone | Four single-rider machines | Four eligible drivers and a confirmed solo option for each person. |
On a phone, swipe the tables sideways to compare all three columns.
The usual shared-plus-solo configuration will not work with only one person qualified to drive. Ask the operator whether it can provide another confirmed arrangement, such as an extra guide. Check that before paying for three standard tickets.
Give the operator your party size, ages, number of eligible drivers and whether anyone needs a passenger arrangement. Machine weight limits can also affect allocation. Private guiding does not remove driver, passenger or equipment requirements.
These are product-specific examples checked on 3 October 2026. Use the actual option shown on Viator for your booking, and confirm any extra with the supplier. A direct operator’s add-on process may differ from Viator’s ticket choices.
| Tour example | Published arrangement | Booking implication |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Circle Super Jeep + Langjökull Mountaineers’ standard Pearl product | Two people share by default; one rider per machine costs extra. | The operator describes reserving single riding during booking. Confirm how your selected Viator option handles the extra and an odd-sized party. |
| Húsafell snowmobile + ice tunnel Arctic Adventures | Shared per-person rate. Solo travellers and odd-numbered groups need a single-rider extra. | The product says single-rider extras are arranged on-site, subject to availability. If your own machine is essential, clarify this before committing. |
| Vatnajökull snowmobile tour Glacier Journey | Two share; solo or odd-sized parties need a solo option. Unrelated solo travellers are not paired together. | The direct booking uses an adult ticket plus a solo add-on where needed. Confirm the selected Viator ticket and any additional payment. |
| Eyjafjallajökull snowmobiling Southcoast Adventure | Tickets are per person. Its example for three uses two Shared Ride tickets and one Single Ride ticket. | That example gives two machines. Confirm the equivalent Viator option; an incorrect configuration can incur a fee at the location. |
| Glacier Rush from Gullfoss Mountaineers | One rider per machine, without a passenger. Intended for riders with some recreational-vehicle experience; confirm suitability. | This is a performance product in a scheduled group, not an exclusive tour. Check suitability and its published December–May window. |
A Vatnajökull snowmobile tour can therefore have a different solo arrangement from a Langjökull snowmobile tour. Check the chosen product instead of applying one glacier’s rules to another. Use the seasonal guide if your dates are fixed.
Ask for a clear scope before comparing a private quote with a standard ticket. Mountaineers and Glacier Journey invite private-tour enquiries; Arctic Adventures also accepts bespoke requests. These enquiry options do not make the ordinary shortlisted tickets private or establish a bookable private departure on your date.
Private guiding may suit a party wanting an agreed format or more individual attention. Confirm any requested pace, language or photo time as part of the quote. Route and timing still depend on the guide and conditions. Paying for exclusivity does not guarantee clear views or unrestricted riding.
The headline starting price may assume shared riding and may be per person. Compare the final total for the same date, departure and party. Two people sharing one machine can still need two paid tickets.
Ask whether an extra is charged per rider, per machine or per booking, and in which currency. For odd-sized groups, check the full arrangement rather than multiplying a shared starting fare by the number of travellers. Avoid adding a supplement twice when it is already included in a single-rider ticket.
Keep the confirmation with the machine arrangement and extra-payment details. If you book through Viator, use the terms for that booking and check how changes must be requested. A private enquiry or an operator’s published rule does not replace the selected ticket’s confirmation.
Once sharing and exclusivity are settled, compare the departure, guided riding time and full itinerary. The how to choose guide brings those decisions together.
Check the named product. A solo traveller may need a single-rider option or extra, as well as the required driving qualification. Some products have minimum departure numbers, so a solo ticket does not by itself confirm that the departure will run. If you want to ride as a passenger, confirm an arrangement before paying. Do not assume another customer will be assigned to share with you.
It gives you a machine without another rider. The guide, departure and transport may still be shared with other customers. Exclusive use needs a separately confirmed private arrangement.
Only if both meet the product’s driver rules and the operator permits a change. Follow the guide’s instructions about where to stop and switch. A shared ticket does not guarantee equal driving minutes or the same procedure on every tour.
Do not assume either policy. Glacier Journey explicitly says it does not pair unrelated solo travellers, and requires a solo option for solo or odd-sized parties. Ask the selected supplier about its allocation rather than applying this rule to all tours.
Not on the ordinary one-shared-plus-one-solo setup, which needs two eligible drivers. Ask whether the supplier can provide a confirmed alternative, such as an extra guide to operate a machine. Availability and additional cost must be agreed before booking.
Check each component. Private sightseeing transport does not, on its own, confirm exclusive glacier transport, guiding or a snowmobile group. Read the inclusions and ask for the scope in writing.
The ride remains guided. Follow the chosen route, group pace and briefing. Having your own machine or arranging a private guide does not make the outing unguided or allow unrestricted glacier riding.
The standard Glacier Rush format uses single-rider machines and a smaller scheduled group. It can still include other travellers. It is a performance experience with its own suitability requirements; arrange and confirm exclusivity separately if that is what you need.
